“Recorded Events”
For my A-Level Textiles Final Assignment, I experimented with different ways in which to record events/social movements through textural means. I explored how other artists used their art to convey their message or story, such as Val Jackson’s tapestries and the Guerrilla Girls with their posters. This sent me looking into the history of feminist movements and protests throughout history; Right to Vote, Equal Pay, Women’s Liberation, Bra Burning Equal Rights Protest, Abortion Rights and the Women’s March. With their messages always conveyed on placards, these signs were of such significance to each of these protests - they told a story, a different perspective, they were records of the event - and became motifs in my work. My final outcome was a hand embroidered scarf that outlined a brief history of feminist movements. A timeline of inspiring women that played a pivotal role in the fight for feminism. The scarf was a representation of the placards in my research, a sign, a story, a wearable protest.
